Known for their incredibly diverse and often intricately patterned foliage, many Calathea species are also famous as "prayer plants" for their habit of folding their leaves up at night and unfurling them in the morning. While specific needs can vary, here are the general guidelines to help your Calatheas thrive:
Light: Calatheas prefer medium to low indirect light. They are naturally found on the forest floor, so direct sunlight will quickly scorch their delicate leaves and cause their vibrant colors to fade.
Temperature: These tropical beauties love warmth. Maintain consistent temperatures between 18-27°C (65-80°F). Protect them from temperatures below 15°C (59°F).
Humidity: High humidity is absolutely crucial for Calatheas. They thrive in levels between 60-80%. Without sufficient humidity, you'll likely see crispy leaf edges and tips.
Watering: Keep the potting mix consistently moist, but never soggy. Water thoroughly when the top inch or two of the soil feels dry to the touch. Calatheas are particularly sensitive to the chemicals found in tap water, so using distilled water, rainwater, or filtered water (like reverse osmosis water) can prevent brown leaf tips and maintain overall plant health. Ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot.
With their stunning foliage and unique leaf movements, Calatheas are truly rewarding plants to grow, provided their specific needs, especially for humidity and water quality, are met.
