If you are purchasing a fly line, you will need some backing. Fly line backing provides piece of mind should you hook into a memorable fish that takes all of your fly line in a single run.  It also helps build up the arbor diameter of any fly reel allowing you to gather more fly line each time you wind your line in.

RIO's traditional Dacron® braided backing features high strength and low stretch and is unsurpassed in quality. A good compromise between thinness and the ability to make blind splice loops. It's easier to knot than other thin brands, but it has too tight of a weave for a blind splice loop.
