(Schutzstaffel Dienstdolch M33). A well-preserved Schutzstaffel (SS) Model 1933 Service Dagger, measuring 37.5 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 22.5 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to the edges and tip, and with some of its original cross grain still visible. Acid-etched onto the obverse is an inscription of “MEINE EHRE HEIßT TREUE” (“MY HONOUR IS LOYALTY”) in Fraktur script. The reverse ricasso is marked with an SS insignia in the form of Sig runes situated within dual circular rings, as well as a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) logo topped by a maker code of “120/34” for an unidentified but documented manufacturer of superior-quality SS blades active in the later period of dress uniform edge weapons production. The blade sits securely within a nickel-silver upper crossguard which is marked with eight notches, distributed in groups of four at both the top and bottom. Stamped onto the reverse of the crossguard is a Roman numeral “I” indicating distribution by Munich district. A single piece of black-painted wood composes the handle, and is carved into a curvature for a comfortable grip. Inset into the obverse of the handle is a silvered German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 25 mm (w) x 15 mm (h). Also inset into the obverse of the pommel is a blackened and silvered SS insignia measuring 9 mm in diameter. It culminates with a nickel-silver lower crossguard, similarly marked with eight notches, which retains a rounded pommel nut that maintains the dagger’s structural integrity. Accompanying the dagger is a period but mis-matched scabbard, constructed of a black-painted magnetic metal shaft. Nickel-plated magnetic steel fixtures are affixed to both the tip and the throat, with the latter retaining a ring for the accommodation of a hanger. A functional catch situated within the throat holds the dagger in place during storage. Minor issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include some running marks to the blade with additional evidence of polishing which has obscured some of the cross grain, minor scratching and surface gouging to the handle grip, and faint scratching to the scabbard. This scarce example by a particularly desirable and unidentified manufacturer remains in a near extremely fine condition.
