Despite its name, the Ponytail Palm (or Bottle Palm) is not a true palm at all. It is actually a drought-tolerant succulent closely related to agaves and yuccas. This plant is prized for its unique, architectural silhouette. It features a swollen, bulbous base which acts as a built-in reservoir to store water. The trunk narrows as it rises, culminating in an explosion of long, thin, leathery leaves that arch and cascade downward like a green fountain or ponytail. Because it stores weeks' worth of moisture in its base, it thrives on minimal care and is a highly popular, low-maintenance choice for both indoor containers and warm outdoor landscapes.
