The Silhouette: Painted in profile on plaster (a medium Miers pioneered), these silhouettes were finely detailed and considered a luxury art form in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
The Frame: Ebonized wood with a gilt oval surround, typical of Miers’ studio. The gilt mount and small decorative clasp at the top are also consistent with original Miers frames.
The Label on the Back: This is the real prize. It reads:
“MIERS, PROFILE PAINTER & JEWELLER, 111 STRAND LONDON, opposite Exeter Change…”
This was Miers’ studio address in London, active between 1788 and his death in 1821. The label even mentions services like creating jewelry with silhouettes, which he and his family workshop were known for.
