Model: Vincent Calabrese “Mona Lisa” Jump Hour
Year: Mid '90s
The Origin. Vincent Calabrese is a name that might be immediately familiar to watch enthusiasts. I had the pleasure of showcasing his work not once, but twice last year. Each time, he offered us his unusual take on a jump hour watch, and today is no different - although this might be his strangest example yet.
The Complication. On the surface, this Mona Lisa is a conventional watch. It has three hands to represent the seconds, minutes and hours, and they all move round the dial as watch hands should. But when the hour hand completes a full rotation, something changes.
The Innovations. It’s silly, it’s clever. But most importantly, it’s very Vincent Calabrese. He’s pioneered multiple horological innovations, including his current mission to reinvent the hairspring, and he founded the Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI) that essentially serves as a Hall of Fame for living watchmakers. And yet he still finds it important to remind people that watches can, and should, be fun.
Condition: In good condition overall. Small hairlines and marks across the watch can be seen on close inspection.
Scope: No box or papers
Movement: In-house Quartz Vincent Calabrese
